‘Write On! The Legend of Hip-Hop’s Ink Slingers’ Documentary to Explore the Writers Who Shaped the Culture
The journalists who helped shape hip-hop culture will be getting their roses while they can still smell them, as a documentary is currently in the works exploring their careers. Hip-hop archivist Syreeta Gates is directing a new film called Write On! The Legend of Hip-Hop’s Ink Slingers, and has launched a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of finishing it.
As of today (Feb. 26), the Kickstarter has raised over $13,000 of a $30,000 goal with just 11 days left to go. In her pledge video, Gates recalls the film as the "never told documentary about hip-hop journalists," reflecting on iconic articles throughout hip-hop history that helped shape the culture.
Veteran journalists such as Miss Info, Miles Marshall Lewis, Danyel Smith and plenty more are reportedly involved in the film, which features a total of 33 interviews so far. Gates and her team, which includes screenwriter Kathy Iandoli, seek to add 20 more interviews, and hope to fund post-production costs that include legal/licensing and festival entry fees.
By donating to the Kickstarter, there are also a slew of rewards for those that contribute. Donations starting at $10 will receive exclusive updates on the making of the film, while larger contributions of $100 or more can even receive an autographed magazine that includes audio from a writer reading part of their iconic piece.
