Yung Miami and JT—collectively known as City Girls—formed in 2017. Both coming from rough Miami neighborhoods, the duo was intent on making it out. Their first studio single, “F**k Dat N***a,” stemmed from the shared ire they had for respective ex-boyfriends. The song features a sample of Khia's raunchy 2002 single, "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)," and quickly racked up plays at their local clubs. After releasing just two songs, City Girls inked a deal with Quality Control that same year. In January of 2018, City Girls recruited Trina for the track’s official video and they were off to the proverbial races. The song was included on Quality Control's compilation album, Control the Streets, Volume 1, a few months later. A mixtape, Period, would follow, but it was City Girls’ contribution to Drake’s 2018 hit "In My Feelings" that took them to new heights.
In November of 2018, City Girls released their debut album, Girl Code, despite JT being behind bars on identity theft charges. The album debuted at No. 63 on the Billboard 200 while two of the project's singles—"Twerk" featuring Cardi B and "Act Up"—landed at No. 29 and No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. After serving nearly two years in prison, JT was finally released and got back to work. In June of 2020, City Girls’ sophomore album, City On Lock, was leaked in its entirety, forcing the duo to drop it early. In March of 2021, their unreleased song, "Twerkulator," went viral after 20-year-old dancer Layla Muhammad choreographed a routine for the song on TikTok, leading to more than 1 million impressions. After clearing Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force "Planet Rock" sample used in the track, it was officially released in May of 2021. A video, directed by Missy Elliott, arrived in June of 2021 and racked up millions of YouTube views, further solidifying their place in rap. Yung Miami has since gone on to host her own REVOLT podcast interview series, Caresha, Please, while JT remains confident the City Girls are here to stay.
