Drake Revisits The Past For Cover Of ‘NWTS,’ Explains Inspiration Behind It

Last week, Drake lit the Internet on fire when he revealed the cover art for his forthcoming album Nothing Was The Same. The double cover, which features profile portraits of Drake as a youngster and Drake as an adult, was celebrated as much as it was ridiculed, but he's stood firmly by the design. This past weekend, after rehearsing his set at the MTV Video Music Awards, Drake caught up with MTV to discuss the inspiration for the artwork.

"What that album art is to me, is the fact that this is my most clear, concise thoughts from now, and my best recollection of then," he told MTV. He went on to explain, "At the end of the day, that's an oil painting by Kadir [Nelson], it's not just like a photo of me posted up. You could get that anywhere."

Despite the cover's upbeat, cheery vibe, Drake also clarified that the cover isn't indicative of the project's content, saying, "The cover is a daytime sky, so it's not to say that the music reflects it sonically, in that sense, but it has a deeper meaning to me, for sure."
