Blu and Exile Are Back in the Studio

In 2012, Blu and Exile released Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them, an album they'd released in 2009, two years after their classic Below The Heavens LP. Now the two have reunited for new music, as Exile shared in a post on Instagram.

"Making dreams come true all over again #bluandexile #belivethat," the California-based producer captioned his Instagram post, which includes a picture of Blu sitting down in front of a condenser mic. You can see the post for yourself below.

While we have no way of knowing whether or not Blu and Exile are putting together a new body of work together, Exile's post is great news for fans regardless. Featuring Exile's soulful production and Blu's brand of nimble lyricism, Below the Heavens stands as a sort of landmark accomplishment for the two artists.

About five years ago we sat down with Blu to discuss the making of the critically acclaimed album, and he offered up a bit of a history lesson about his working relationship with Exile. "I met Exile though Aloe, and I met Aloe Blacc through Science Project; Aloe was recording with Science Project; I was recording with Science Project, and Aloe was like, ‘Yo, you got to meet this dude Exile.’ "

Blu continued, "[Exile] was working with Slum Village at the time. [And then] Exile came out to a show, back when I used to host shows in Hollywood, help set up events and shit like that. I would wrap up the night with a little set. [Exile and I] started working from there. He was like, ‘Yo, I need a song for my record, if you don’t mind.’ He was working on a Dirty Science record. We linked up to cut something. I forgot what song it was, but on the drive there, he starts playing some crazy-ass beats. I was like, ‘Am I real right now? Am I sitting in the car with the illest producer I’ve ever heard?’ I just started going through raps in my head, just kicking raps off the dome, and we put together like three songs right there in the whip. [Exile] was like, ‘Dude, we got to do an album.’"

Blu has been fairly quiet in 2017, but last July he dropped his Titans in the Flesh EP with Nottz, and it's safe to say his skills are as sharp now as they were in 2007. We hope that means any collab he's doing with Exile turns out to be just as fire.
