Twitter Shares Thoughts on the Current State of New York Rap

Social media beef has become a part of hip-hop culture more than ever. Today (Feb. 26), Hot 97 radio personality Ebro Darden and Queens MC 50 Cent had a very public spat online and rap fans chimed in.

The discussion began when Ebro, Hot 97's former program director and current host of Ebro in the Morning, claimed that 50 and Ja Rule's beef was responsible for the breakdown and division of New York hip-hop. Ebro also accused Fif of turning his back on New York rap and, in classic 50 Cent fashion, the rapper fired back on social media. This Metropolitan beef started quite the conversation online. The rapper accused Darden of failing to play more New York hip-hop on the radio station.

“This guy said I destroyed New York Hip-Hop (sic) because I didn’t work with New York artists, to cover up the program director that wouldn’t play there (sic) records. SMH.” 50 wrote in an Instagram post.

The back and forth between G-Unit's general and Hot 97's resident fire starter got us at XXL thinking. So we turned to the fans to get their thoughts on the current state of New York hip-hop.

When the question " do you think of the current state of New York rap?" was posed on Twitter, opinionated users popped up with the quickness. Some tweeters defended New York rap, some admitted it's not what it used to be and some even gave examples of artists who are holding it down for the Empire State -- Joey Bada$$, Flatbush Zombies and Fabolous, just to name a few.
