The XXL Awards – Who Ruled Summer 2010?
When Rick Ross proclaimed the middle months of the calendar his on “Summer’s Mine,” the rap heavyweight wasn’t only taking subliminal shots at Young Jezzy but there were some elements of truth in that bold declaration. For much of the summer the Miami boss dominated airwaves and nightspots with his infectious anthem, “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast).” The follow-up single “MC Hammer” was just as catchy. Count the release of his proper fourth studio album, Teflon Don, and you’ll see why the Ross would be so presumptuous.
Of course he wasn’t alone in trying to claim the crown of the summer’s hottest act. Young Money rap star Drake delivered his much-anticipated debut, Thank Me Later. Eminem bounced back from the lackluster response of Relapse with the year’s top selling rap album, Recovery. Add to that the return of Kanye West and summer 2010 was hot—literally and musically.
With the summer coming to an official end today [hello, autumnal equinox], XXL looks back at the best the season had to offer in terms of hip-hop.
