Lupe Fiasco stopped by The Breakfast Club, the popular morning show of New York City’s Power 105.1 dial, yesterday (July 25) to continue his heavy promotional run in support of his new album, Food & Liquor 2: Great American Rap Album Pt. 1.

When one of the show’s hosts, Charlamagne Tha God, asked Lupe about his rocky relationship with Atlantic Records, the Chi-town MC made it clear what his future plans are—he plans on going the indie route.

“I’m definitely not going back into the majors,” Lupe insisted. “I’m definitely going indie when we’re done.”

All that’s keeping him from that path is putting out his final two albums under his Atlantic deal, including his upcoming album, Food & Liquor 2: Great American Rap Album Pt. 1, which is slated for a September 25 release and the next project after that.

“We coming to end of our relationship, so now everybody is like…it’s like the going away party,” Lupe continued to explain. “We gotta couple of albums left. After this album, I got one left. It’s all good for now. They’ve been giving me my room.”

As the cover subject of XXL in May 2011, Lupe spoke about the creative direction and aim of his third solo album, Lasers, causing a fallout with him and Atlantic.

“They still don’t get it…even without a hit record, [I] will be just as relevant and successful as the dude with the hit record,” Lupe said at the time.

His press run also included a stop at MTV’s RapFix Live yesterday, in which Fiasco broke down in tears after host Sway Calloway showed him tape of old MTV footage of visiting Lupe in his Chicago neighborhood.
