Uncle Sam wants a word with Lauryn Hill.

According to the New York Daily News, federal prosecutors say the five-time Grammy-winning rapper/singer has been charged with willfully failing to file income tax returns with the IRS. If convicted, Hill could face up to a year in prison and additional heavy fines.

Hill is charged with a failure to pay for the calendar years 2005, 2006 and 2007. Authorities tell the NY Daily News that the South Orange, New Jersey resident earned more than $1.8 million during that period, with most of her income coming from recording and film industry royalties.

Hill, the mother of six children, is scheduled to make an appearance in Newark Federal Court on June 29.

Most recently, L-Boogie was Nas’ surprise guest at Hot 97’s Summer Jam mega concert at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday (June 3). There, she sang the hook to the Fugees’ hit record, “Ready or Not,” before performing her own smash, “Lost Ones” and assisting Nas on his classic single, “If I Ruled The World.”

The day after, Lauryn voiced her opinion in respecting Nicki Minaj’s decision to not take the Summer Jam stage after Hot 97 personality, Peter Rosenberg, referred to Minaj’s single, “Starships,” as “bullshit.”

“We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music, while giving artists their proper respect,” Lauryn tweeted. “This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted, or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics. We can do better than this, there is a better way, or else ‘we’ (the proverbial we) find ourselves in danger of being hypocrites!!!”—Mark Lelinwalla
