Today, June 11, is the birthday of Florida rapper Kodak Black. The Project Baby turns 21 today.

The Pompano Beach, Fla. MC has had a stellar year as far as rising stardom goes. Writing rhymes since 9 years old, Kodak began rapping at high school pep rallies in Florida. After Drake posted a video of himself dancing to one of Kodak’s joints "SKRT", the latter went from being a regional name to a national treasure. With breakthrough mixtapes like Project Baby and Institution and relentless freestyles, the Florida rapper has become a hometown hero. He's even compared himself to legends like Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. to stir up controversy. Kodak's bars and relentless grind not only scored him a record deal with Atlantic Records, but also earned him a spot on the 2016 XXL Freshman Class alongside Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty and more.

“I just kept elevating and elevating. I had little setbacks, but I used them as stepping stones,” he told XXL for his 2015 Show & Prove.

Kodak's debut album Painting Pictures dropped in March of 2017, and thanks to favorable reviews and his hit single "Tunnel Vision," the LP peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Though he's been in and out of jail for the past few years Kodak, who legally changed his name to Bill K. Kapri a few months back, has a bright future to look forward to.

Happy Birthday, Kodak!
