Drake and The Weeknd Lead 2016 Juno Nominees
Drake and The Weeknd lead a talented field of nominees for the 2016 Juno Awards, which are scheduled for April 3. The ceremony, which has been held for the last 45 years, aims to honor excellence in Canadian recorded music. This year, the two superstars from Toronto join Justin Bieber in pacing the field.
The OVO leader racked up five nominations of his own. He's up for Artist of the Year; the Juno Fan Choice Award; Single of the Year for his "Hotline Bling," which was released in July and served as a de facto remix of D.R.A.M.'s "Cha Cha"; Album of the Year for If You're Reading This It's Too Late, which was billed as a mixtape when it dropped without warning last February, and was later issued to retail stores and certified platinum; and Rap Recording of the Year, also for Reading. (At the Junos, Rap Recording refers to a full-length body of work.) Noah "40" Shebib is nominated for Recording Engineer of the Year for his work on "Know Yourself" and "Jungle" from that album.
As for Drake's former protege, The Weeknd, he's up for Artist of the Year and Juno Fan Choice as well as: Single of the Year for "Can't Feel My Face"; Album of the Year for Beauty Behind the Madness; Songwriter of the Year for his work on "Face," "The Hills" and "In the Night," all from Beauty; and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, also for Beauty. Like Drake with 40, The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face" and "In the Night" earn Serban Ghenea a nomination in the Recording Engineer category.
