Meet the 4-Year-Old Girl Kanye West Samples on “Ultralight Beam”
Kanye West's new album, The Life of Pablo, has some heady samples on it, from Arthur Russell's "Answers Me" on "30 Hours" to Nina Simone's "Do What You Gotta Do" on "Famous." But for the opening track, "Ultralight Beam," the rapper went in an entirely different direction for the sample -- specifically, a 4-year-old girl's Instagram.
The song, an early fan favorite off the album, opens with a toddler's voice invoking what sounds like, appropriately, a church sermon. "We don't want no devils in the house, God!" proclaims the precocious little angel. "We want the Lord, and that's it!"
Turns out that toddler's name is Natalie, and she's on Instagram with less than 800 followers right now. The audio that was used on the album was posted three weeks ago on Jan. 21 by Natalie's mother, Taerinda, and it's unclear how exactly Kanye found the clip, as Taerinda only has about a thousand followers on IG herself.
As an opening for the album, "Ultralight Beam" is stunning. It features Kelly Price, Kirk Franklin and The-Dream with a stunning verse from Chance The Rapper at the end. Kanye performed the song, along with "Highlights," on SNL last night (Feb. 13).
If you explore Natalie's page, you'll find her strumming the guitar for a ballad to Jesus, teaching her momma a couple things, or just generally being absurdly cute. Whether she'll be getting any royalties from the sales of Kanye's new LP remains to be seen.
The Life of Pablo is available to stream on Tidal for subscribed users right now and to buy on Kanye's website exclusively for $20.
