Watch Every 2016 XXL Freshman Freestyle
Like the vendor selling ices out of a cart on the street corner, the XXL Freshman list signals summer's arrival. Beyond interviews and photo shoots, we ask each of the 10 rappers selected to spit a freestyle for the occasion. The block is hot and the bars better be, too. With June coming to a close today, we've rounded up the 10 freestyles released thus far, presented both above and below in the order in which they were published.
Up top, Kodak Black shows that he's a winner not a quitter, while below, Denzel Curry dismisses the fakeness. Anderson .Paak chronicles the substances that keep some hooked, and Lil Dicky rattles off head-spinning rhymes about fate and fortunes of nice guys. G Herbo details the grimness of life from the bottom, rapping for two-plus minutes, Lil Uzi Vert gives props to his fellow Freshmen, Dave East evokes both Nas and The Notorious B.I.G., and 21 Savage explains why life has been no walk in the park. Then there's the fan-voted 10th spot winner Lil Yachty, who comes through with a solid freestyle -- keep in mind he hasn't even been rapping for a year.
In perhaps the most noteworthy session though, Desiigner spit an a capella referencing Fairly Odd Parents character Timmy Turner, a clip that has since been turned in to an official track with Travis Scott featured. A video was posted online Tuesday (June 28) showing Desiigner and G.O.O.D. Music engineer and producer Mike Dean sparking up as a recorded version of the freestyle played in the background. Desiigner's 45 second free has already amassed over 3 million views, with many expecting a hit record to follow.
