YBN Cordae, Freddie Gibbs, idk and More: Bangers This Week
Another week, another slate of new tunes from hip-hop's best and brightest. As any fan knows, this is par for the course; there will always be new rap songs that drop throughout the week, with Friday now being the "big day" each time around. XXL has arranged the songs that released this week in one place. Enjoy this week's roundup.
YBN Cordae is in a field of young lyricists making noise; the attention he pays to his bars has gotten him attention from the big dogs of hip-hop's history and his rap peers alike. Cordae's latest is "Have Mercy," where he goes crazy over a pounding beat, referencing how far he's come and his disdain for older artists hating on him. He shares a lot of ideas in three minutes, but it's all cohesive.
Freddie Gibbs and Madlib's long-awaited collab project may just be closer than we think. This week, they drop off "Bandana," featuring the reggae mainstay Assassin. Madlib goes a little left of center with the beat; Forgiato Freddie gets extra creative with the flows to keep pace. Add Assassin going off to the mix, and Freddie and Madlib have another one.
Coming out of left field, idk had a little anger to get off his chest. His new song "Trigger Happy" is a barbed and angry flurry of bars, where he raps about how other rappers can't compete with him, along with a few people he feels are in his way. IDK accuses fellow DMV rapper Logic and his manager of trying to stop one of his bags, then lofts insults to even the score. Let's see where this goes.
