14 Remixes to Tay-K’s “The Race”

Three years ago, Bobby Shmurda had the song of the summer with "Hot Nigga," but unfortunately he didn't get to experience the benefits of having a hit song for long because he was arrested on conspiracy, reckless endangerment and weapons possession charges just five months after its release. Now Texas rapper Tay-K is facing a more serious charge, keeping him away from promoting his first single and one of summer 2017's hottest tracks.

The 17-year-old, who's currently incarcerated, dropped the visual for "The Race" in June, amassing over 45 million views since its' YouTube debut. Since then, the beat for the song, produced by S.Diesel, has been revisited countless times by hip-hop artists, old and new, as they body the beat in their own respective ways.

"The Race" references the teen being on the run after fleeing arrest, which was actually happening in real-time during the video shoot. In 2016, Tay-K was put on house arrest after being involved in a home invasion that led to to one fatality. On March 26, Tay-K tweeted, "fuck dis house arrest shit fuck 12 they gn hav 2 catch me on hood." Shortly after, he fled from Texas to Elizabeth, N.J., where he was arrested by U.S. Marshals the day "The Race" video was released. Tay-K has since been transferred to an adult jail, and has been charged with capital murder.

Despite being locked up, "The Race" peaked at No. 44 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it has moved down the chart but remained since early August. Rappers like Kodak Black and Meek Mill have even showed him love on social media by posting video of themselves rapping along to the track.
