Prince Loves Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright”
Kendrick Lamar's "Alright" is quickly becoming the defining song of To Pimp a Butterfly and now Prince is singing the song's praises. In an article written by Smokey D. Fontaine for Medium, where the writer is invited to Prince's Paisley Park studios, Prince comments to his producer and assistant about how much he enjoys K.Dot's latest album. "He just has something he has to say," said the superstar artist. "It's pure. And with Thundercat on the album? Come on. You're not taking 'Alright' off my playlist!"
The "Purple Rain" singer also said he is a big fan of Kanye West's "Gold Digger," "the way he made something new with that sample was perfect." And Jill Scott's "A Long Walk," "every song on that first album was the truth."
Lamar and Prince do have history together. When Prince released two new album in September of 2014, he celebrated by doing a livestream concert with Yahoo! and welcomed Kendrick to the stage. The TDE rapper performed "What's My Name" from Prince's 1998 album Crystal Ball. Rumors spread that the two got in the studio together to record but a song has not surfaced. Based on Prince's affinity for the rapper's music, that could change at any time.
