Megan Thee Stallion Files for Trademark of Hot Girl Summer: Report

Megan Thee Stallion coined the phrase “Hot Girl Summer” and it has become a viral meme and a popular catchphrase used by hot girls and hot boys, alike. Now the 2019 XXL Freshman wants to capitalize off the term.

According to a Billboard report, published on Monday (July 22), Megan is in the process of trademarking the catchphrase. A trademark was filed on July 10 at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

According to the document, the phrase will be used on apparel like “Shirts and short-sleeved shirts; A-shirts; Body shirts; Dress shirts; Graphic T-shirts; Hooded sweatshirts; Long-sleeved shirts; Open-necked shirts; Over shirts; Short-sleeve shirts; Sleep shirts; Sport shirts; Sports shirts; Sweat shirts; T-shirts; Tee shirts; Tee-shirts; Turtle neck shirts; Yoga shirts.”

Probably not coincidentally, the trademark was filed on the same day Megan informed a follower on her Twitter account that she was in the beginning stages of trademarking the phrase. Since the popularity of the “Hot Girl Summer” term, brands like Forever 21, Maybelline, Wendy's and others have used it in their marketing campaigns. Of course, the Houston rapper would like to see a check from it.

Megan is among several rappers who have filed trademarks for popular catchphrases they have created online. Back in March, Cardi B applied for a trademark of the phrase "Okurrr." But unfortunately, her application was refused by the USTPO because the term is too commonplace by a variety of sources.
