Though the award wasn't aired on television Tuesday night (Oct. 4), the 2016 BET Hip Hop Award for album of the year went to Drake'Views.

The monster LP beat out Dr. Dre's Compton, DJ Khaled's I Changed a Lot, Kanye West's The Life of Pablo, Future's DS2 and Fetty Wap's self-titled debut album for the prize.

The criteria for who gets selected for the award is unclear, but it seems like the massive commercial success of Drake's album helped him win this year. In August, Views went triple platinum, making the Toronto rapper the first artist of the year to achieve that benchmark. In late Sept., the album also hit over a billion streams on Apple Music.

Though Drake won album of the year, Kendrick Lamar took home lyricist of the year, and in his acceptance speech, he promised fans he'd keep spitting real shit for as long as he's around.

“I promise you this," said Kendrick onstage, "as long as you keep music in your heart, keep it in your soul, no matter what type of style, no matter what type of flow, no matter what type of beat, what type of creativity, I guarantee you it’s one of the things that always brings us together in this room. We right here for a reason, you dig what I’m saying? Because of music.”
