Atlanta rapper Derez De’Shon is heading into the new year by keeping the momentum he’s created in 2018 going strong. Fresh off signing a new deal and dropping "Beat the Odds," which features fellow Atlanta artist YFN Lucci, Derez shares his latest song and XXL’s got the exclusive premiere.

Produced by Will A Fool and DJ Chase, “By the Scale” is a motivational street anthem to remind others that there’s no shame in doing what you have to in order to persevere against all odds. “The inspiration came from my need to feed my family by any means necessary,” Derez shared with XXL. “The street hustle called and I answered. I did what I had to do at the time as any man would.”

The track features an infectious hook—“I was saved by the scale”—with Derez reflecting on everything he’s been through, on the streets and in life, that brought him to this moment.

“That’s where I slept, on a mattress with no furniture/And if these walls can talk, I hope they tell nobody else,” he croons on the track.

When it comes to what’s up next for Derez, he’s laser-focused.

“Ima keep doing what I love with this music and give the people what they want,” Derez tells XXL of his near future plans. “Pain inspired my music. We just trying to beat the odds, but they looking in our favor.”
