Cardi B Apologizes to Martin Luther King Jr’s Daughter for Controversial Skit
Cardi B found herself in hot water today (Aug. 28) after a skit of her playing Martin Luther King Jr's wife Coretta Scott King leaked, and their daughter, Dr. Bernice King, had some choice words about it. Now, it seems Cardi has reached out to Dr. King and apologized, and the two could be engaging in a further discussion soon.
The skit titled 'The Real Housewives of the Civil Rights Movement' leaked on TMZ, and given Cardi's appearance, appears to be a few years old. It was a segment from the show Off the Rip, hosted by Rip Michaels of Wild 'N Out. In it, the new mother appears alongside women portraying Rosa Parks and the wives of Rev. Jesse Jackson and Malcolm X, and pokes fun at MLK Jr's alleged infidelity during the Civil Rights Movement.
"All the hussies wanna sleep with my husband, but it's alright, 'cause I know he marches home to me," Cardi says as Coretta Scott King.
Dr. Bernice King did not take kindly to the skit, which, to add insult to injury, leaked on the same day as the 55th anniversary of the March on Washington and MLK's famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
"On the 55th anniversary of #IHaveADream,’ a clip on @TMZ depicts my parents (Cardi B playing my mom) & great women of the CRM in a repulsive, false light," Dr. King wrote in a now-deleted tweet. "They paid an extraordinary price so people of color can have a platform- & this is how you use it. @iamcardib: Let's talk."
Although Cardi didn't respond publicly herself, it does appear that she reached out to Dr. King to express her apologies. Later on, Dr. King again took to Twitter thanking the "I Like It" artist.
@iamcardib, for reaching out to me and apologizing for the skit that aired on @TMZ. I look forward to talking with you soon," Dr. King said.
Here's to Cardi for clearing the air. Read Dr. Bernice King's tweet below.
