Benny The Butcher’s Pitch for 2019 XXL Freshman
Before the 2019 XXL Freshman Class will be revealed this summer, the Freshman hopefuls are here to show and prove why they deserve a spot in this year’s class. The 10th Spot voting will launch on March 25, which means hip-hop's rising newcomers are vying for a spot on the 2019 XXL Freshman cover.
While the industry is enamored with vibes over lyrics, Benny The Butcher is cut from a different cloth. From Buffalo, N.Y., Benny first made a name in the streets before making the industry recognized him. After serving several years in prison for a drug-related offense beginning in 2003, he started making music a priority around 2015. He launched his own label, Black Soprano Family, the following year and later got into the family business and joined cousins Westside Gunn and Conway on their growing imprint Griselda Records in February 2017.
A vivid lyricist and adept storyteller who has received cosigns from the likes of Prodigy and Styles P, Benny has been pumping out hardbody tape after hardbody tape over the last few years including My First Brick (2016) and Butcher on Steroids (2017) hosted by DJ Green Lantern. Along the way, the 34-year-old rhymer has worked with some of the game’s most respected spittas including Ghostface Killah, Jadakiss, Royce da 5’9” and more. Benny last left us with Tana Talk 3 in November of 2018, which is being heralded as one of the year's best tapes in some circles.
