Azealia Banks Calls Threat of Legal Action for Comments About Irish People Racist

Azealia Banks earned a bunch of attention after she made some offensive comments about Irish people last week. Her comments were so shocking that one Ireland-based barrister by the name of Tomas McGarvey highlighted the country's Communication Act 2003, which is a law that says that if someone posts menacing or offensive gestures through electronics, they can be charged with an offense. The idea that Banks could get charged for her comments is one she feels is racist.

"Racism at its finest," Banks said in an Instagram post she uploaded Sunday (Jan. 27).  "The eagerness to put a Black woman in a cage. EL OH EL. If I’m gettin arrested then we will have to go through my DMs and arrest each and every person who said racist things to me, which would mean you’d basically need to arrest the entire country of Ireland."

Banks initially jumped into controversy after a series of jokes she told about Irish people during a performance. Then, in a series of Instagram comments, she let loose some controversial remarks that played into Irish stereotypes.

"You lot are a bunch of prideful inbred leprechauns who have ZERO global influence and ZERO white privilege," Banks wrote to an IG commenter. "The rest of the world's white folk don't want to associate with you lot at all and it's because you are barbarians."

Elsewhere in her post speaking on the potential threat of legal action against her, Banks questions McGarvey.

"Who is Tomas McGarvey?" Banks continued. "The fact that these people think this should scare me into submission to let people say racist things to me so long as I don't say them back is hilarious. Arrest me and THEN do what? 😂😂 .. Tomas is trying to make me a national hero I see."
