Akon Calls “Blacks for Trump” Guy at Phoenix Rally a Sellout
Maurice Symonette turned more than a few heads when he popped up behind President Trump at a rally in Phoenix, Ariz. earlier this week. The talk was due to Symonette hoisting a "Blacks for Trump 2020" sign above his head during the rally. While there's definitely a chance Symonette genuinely believes in the controversial president, a more cynical person might say he's being bought—someone like Akon, for instance.
Speaking with TMZ, the Konvict Muzik boss offered his take on Symonette, claiming the man is only supporting the president—despite his perceived unwillingness to emphatically condemn White nationalists—to make money.
“This dude is being paid to be there and he’s an idiot for doing it,” Akon said. "It just goes to show how selfish our society is to the point where you don’t think about everyone else or the longterm goal of what the freedom of this country should become and what people fought for up until this point for us. You know, a little dollar, you're willing to sell yourself out, your people out and your soul out."
According to TMZ, Symonette has a past as something of an extremist, being that he was once a member of the Yahweh ben Yahweh cult. The celebrity gossip site also says he believes Hillary Clinton and ISIS are out to kill Black and White women.
Akon goes on to say Symonette is simply following the lead of the Republican party, who are also being "bought" and "sold" in a continual effort to protect President Trump from criticism. The Senegalese singer's comments come as a pretty big surprise considering that he actually offered up some hefty praise the President Trump's way back in January.
“I respect him. I honestly believe he’s probably the most courageous president to ever hit the office,” Akon said at the time. “But at the same time, I also believe that if you’re gonna be a strong leader, you also have to be compassionate. And you have to think about the people’s wellbeing and the process of as you’re doing things because it’s one thing to be tough. But everybody knows a bully, one day, will be taken down. It’s just a matter of time.”
