21 Savage Breaks Silence Following ICE Arrest, Says He Was Targeted
Two days after being released from the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), 21 Savage has just opened up about his arrest in his first interview since he was detained.
On Friday (Feb. 15), 21 told ABC News' Linsey Davis on Good Morning America about the conditions he endured while in custody. He also described the night he was arrested during 2019 Super Bowl weekend.
"I was just driving. And I just seen guns and blue lights. And, then, I was in the back of a car. And I was gone," 21 said of his arrest. "They didn't say nothing. They just said, 'We got Savage.'"
21 Savage was arrested by ICE after they discovered that the rapper was born in England and had been living in the U.S. illegally after overstaying his visa. After he was arrested along with Young Nudy in Atlanta, artists like T.I., Meek Mill, Metro Boomin and more advocated for his freedom. After 21 was released from ICE custody, 21's mother thanked everyone for defending her son.
Since his arrest, ICE has dropped the aggravated felony charge they had originally planned to use against him in his deportation case. During his interview, 21 couldn't confirm whether his altered lyrics in "A Lot"—which included bars that were critical of border control—had something to do with his arrest. However, his lawyer Alex Spiro believes that's the case.
"Yes, and we believe honestly that he was targeted of course like they said," 21's lawyer Alex Spiro told ABC. "And part of the reason, we think, is because he's both a celebrity and they can use this as a way to send a message and also perhaps because of his music."
Now that's he's out on bond, 21 wants to turn his situation into something positive. During his interview, the rapper said that he understands the pain that other DREAMers are going through and he says he intends to bring their issues to the forefront of journey to becoming a U.S. citizen.
"I feel your pain and I'm going to do everything in my power to try and bring awareness to your pain," 21 Savage said.
