Webbie Talks ‘Savage Life 4′: “It’s The Same Thing, But With More Bad Bitches”

Webbie is focused again. After a series of unexpected life events—the death of Trill Entertainment member Lil Phat, Lil Boosie’s prolonged incarceration—the Louisiana native is getting back to what made him a household name. This week, he released Savage Life 4, a record that finds him returning to familiar territory with hard-knocking production for his wild street tales, indulging in a bad bitch, and coming up to riches. The 28-year-old is always about his people, so he’s simply here to give them what they want. Webbie swung by the XXL headquarters to talk about his progression as a rapper, what motivates him, and why he sees himself as immortal. —Eric Diep (@E_Diep)

Did you work with the same people from your previous albums?
I don’t know, bruh. 'Cause let me tell you, man. I got into this, I never asked whoever did the beat. I never asked who did the beat. I’m not like, who did that one? If I do it, I do it. That’s what it is, man. That was the big break of the shit. Niggas is just living life.

What’s a typical studio session for you?
I just go to the beats. Push this up. Turn this on. Turn this on for the computer. Go to this file. Click beats. Go in there and I listen. And I just write, man. That shit ain’t hard. A nigga don’t sit there and think, “Man, I could hear some bass with it.”

What motivates you?
The people. The world motivates me. Just walking up here, the people that matter. "What up Webbie? What you doing up here? Keep going." That’s what motivates me to keep going, man. The music shit ain’t real, man. That’s why there are gaps when shit didn’t happen. Like my brother man, free Boosie. He go to jail. This shit happened. I had the situation come up in my life. I ain’t got time to be fucking thinking about no rap man. This shit started in the bathroom when you in school. We supposed to be in class, but you rapping against somebody from the other neighborhood. That’s how that shit start. Next thing you know, now we here.

Did it take you a long time to make this album?
No, man. Like I told you, this shit I just put out. “When you gonna come back?” Nigga ain’t even having time to be thinking about this music shit. Got so much real life. But I jumped in there and did this shit. Savage Life 4, let’s go. All I gotta do is say what is on my mind like I’ve been doing since I started. If you like me and my mind, ‘preciate you. Shout out to you. Straight up.

Is this album going to be for your fans who have been sticking with you since day one?
No one. It’s going to be for whoever the first one is for. All my albums are for the same people. For everybody. I ain’t saying, “No. Don’t you go get my album. Not you.” Yeah, it’s for everybody. It don’t matter. Everybody. I’m talking about the kids when you listen. Everybody. I am going to be me.

What have you noticed about your progression from Savage Life to Savage Life 4?
That people care. People want to hear me talk and want to hear what I got to say. I got people out there that want it. So many people that really care. The streets is telling you: “C’mon, man. C’mon. Fuck. We want to hear that shit. Give us something.” Man, y’all just don’t know. We got all this stuff the street gonna fuck. Man, man fuck. Motherfucking lawyers calling. You know, my grandmother—happy birthday to you too, baby. I love you with my momma. You know, you got the regular life going on. You forget that you got this. Now, it feel like you owe it to the people though. I owe it to all my people. Shout out to all my people. You love me, I love you.

How did you link up with Lloyd for the single "Realest"?
He working. He sound good and he can sing. He working. That’s what I tell everybody. Everybody keep going. You can be what you want to be. You working, you’re going to link up with whoever working. All the workers end up working together some kind of way. Even if they end up working against each other, at the top beef, they still gonna be together in the same sense. Shout out to Lloyd. Go get his album man. That boy is talented. That boy can sing. Some people say that boy can sing better than Michael Jackson. For real! Keep going, nigga. I like that.

Tell me about “Bad Bitch 2.”
It’s the same thing. Part two. Just like you said, “What’s the difference between you then?” It’s the same thing, but with more bad bitches. “Walk like a bad bitch, talk like a bad bitch. Make a girl wanna look, cause you a real bad bitch. I can see you keep your hair fixed, but that don’t mean you really have shit.” Ya heard me?

You’ve said you want to do a Savage Life 5, 6 and 7. All the way to 100. Why do you want to keep the series going so strong like that?
Shit, as long as I live. I can’t help it. Savage life, bruh. Savage life, so as long as I am living, it’s going to continue until I die. But guess what? I ain’t gone never die. So, that’s crazy. I don’t feel nothing. My fucking body, man. I don’t give a fuck. But, I know. I know I ain’t never gonna die.
