The Best Music Videos Of The Week, 6/2-6/8
This week finds the likes of Curren$y, Compton Menace, Willie the Kid and others releasing new music videos. Ill Bill takes a bad acid trip in his video for "Acid Reflux," while ScienZe keeps it intimate with hid video for "The Pillow." Check through to see all of XXL's favorite videos of the week.
Curren$y Feat. Cornerboy P - "Sunroof"
Spitta capitalizes on choice location in the video for his and Cornerboy P's "Sunroof." While the cinematography primarily adheres to sweeping Stedicam shots, the excellent splashes of blue in the video's color scheme make "Sunroof" more memorable.
Ill Bill - "Acid Reflux"
Ill Bill and Reelf Wolf Films channel their inner Charles Manson with this bugged-out video for Bill's Large Professor-produced "Acid Reflux." Complete with zany, kaleidoscope shots of Bill to a scene of hippies experiencing a very bad trip, "Acid Reflux" translates the song's title into the perfect hip-hop nightmare.
ScienZe - "The Pillow"
ScienZe's latest video perfectly translates the New York rhymer's intimate and sensual lyrics by shooting the video's buxom female star entirely in soft focus, while framing ScienZe in sharp deep focus in a different frame size. It's cleverly shot and emotionally resonant video that captures the essence of ScienZe's song.
Willie The Kid & The Alchemist - "Halal Tuna"
The video for "Halal Tuna," off Willie the Kid and The Alchemist's upcoming collaborative project, succeeds by aptly channeling A-L-C's grandiose sampling in its visuals without overshadowing Willie's rhymes by adding too much crazy editing. In addition, the toned-down color palette gives the video a regal aura befitting the music.
Compton Menace Feat. Wiz Khalifa - "Ain't No Changing Me"
The video for Compton Menace and Wiz Khalifa's single "Ain't No Changing Me" makes excellent use of multiple sets, varied color schemes and different shooting speeds. While some of the traditional club scenes feel somewhat underwhelming, the slow motion shots of the Menace's native city give the video a more inspired visual palette.
