Watch Stefflon Don’s 2018 XXL Freshman Freestyle
The 2018 XXL Freshman class is a powerful example of not judging a book by its glossy cover. The nine rappers incontestably define the current state of hip-hop in more ways than one, but there’s a striking, fearless ting in the mix who is representing for an entirely different demographic than the men standing beside her on the cover. Her name is Stefflon Don, and the London-bred rapper is representing for her hometown and every unapologetic, alpha woman across the world to the core.
Born Stephanie Allen to two Jamaican parents, the buxom, fast-talking spitter is the first international hip-hop star from London to grace the Freshman cover—Iggy Azalea is officially the first international XXL Freshman. Raised partly in Holland, Stefflon was inspired by the region’s strong dancehall culture, which gives new understanding behind her patois-laced bars. Old-school veterans Lil' Kim, Eve and Foxy Brown propelled the 26-year-old artist to start a rap career of her own, but its her brash bars and melodic alto that make for a bravado performance every time, and keeps her foot on the competition’s necks.
In her 2018 XXL Freshman freestyle, Stefflon Don boasts about her recent success, rapping, “I can keep it comin’ 50 to 100, I been making mommy proud, ah/Pulled up in the midas ting, you can hear me comin’ from a hundred miles, ah/I’m the realest ting, bitches imitatin’ but this is my sound, yo/When you step inna U.K., ask the realest niggas what I’m about, yo.”
Like a moth to a flame, fans have been flocking to the British-Jamaican bombshell ever since she dropped 2016’s “Real Ting,” and the follow-up, “16 Shots.” In 2017, the Universal Records signee inked a deal with Quality Control and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard U.K. Singles Chart thanks to “Hurtin Me,” her reggae smash hit with French Montana.
