It was a busy weekend for the Heineken Inspire tour in New York City. After an all day event on Friday (July 30) featuring live music and DJ sets, the main event for the hip-hop crowd came on Saturday (July 31) and did not disappoint. Although those who came were in attendance to see Wale and J. Cole, they showed plenty of love when surprise guest Rick Ross hit the stage to cap the day.

Held at the St. John’s Center on the Manhattan’s West Side and free with an RSVP. DJ D-Nice warmed the crowd up from the event’s start at 3 P.M. until XXL Freshman J. Cole took the stage. The Roc Nation signee came out to “We On” and then performed favorites from last summer’s The Warm Up, with fans often rapping along, as well as his current hit, “Who Dat.” Cole ended by spitting “Premeditated Mudrer,” a track possibly off his upcoming debut album.

After the Fayetteville native left the stage, Wale, another XXL Freshman alum, rocked the packed house, running through hits including “Pretty Girls” and “Chillin',” even taking an impromptu walk through the crowd. He also revealed some new music from More About Nothing, his new mixtape dropping tomorrow, including “Black and Gold.” [Watch below]

The unexpected highlight of the day may have come when Rick Ross made a surprise appearance, coming out to “Blowin’ Money Fast (B.M.F.),” exciting the fans in attendance. Rozay then did “Aston Martin Music” [watch below] and “MC Hammer” also from Teflon Don, before spitting verses from hits “All I Do Is Win,” “Hustlin,’” “Boss,” and the remixes to “Hello, Good Morning” and “O Let’s Do It.”—Adam Fleischer
