In January you think that Los Angeles lacks seasons. You see the palm trees and the beach and the weirdly perpetual rompers and you trick yourself into thinking that the city is one where summer never ends, where the rhythms that govern New York and Chicago and even the deep South cease to exist. But in August and September, you realize you were wrong. Rich The Kid's "No Ceilings" video is a potent reminder that the dog days in Southern California are a special plane of existence, where you get vertical shots of blue skies and the kind of traffic tickets that you can comfortably laugh off. Taken from his recent, beautifully titled Flexin' On Purpose, "No Ceilings" borrows its name from the stellar 2009 Lil Wayne mixtape that all but marks the end of his run as the best rapper alive. Rich is angling for a Street Pulitzer for resurrecting the inverted NBA headband.
