If you’ve been following the gossip news on various different outlets of the internet at all today, you are well aware that Kanye West proposed to his girlfriend Kim Kardashian in an elaborate production that included orchestral arrangements, fireworks and Jaden Smith. It was grandiose and over-the-top which is exactly what you can expect with two human being as a permanently high volume as Kanye and Kim.

However, ‘Ye and Kim K. are not the only people in hip-hop that have proposed in interesting and unique ways. XXL is looking back today at some of the most romantic stories on how hip-hop power couples proposed to each other.

Will Smith & Jada Pinkett-Smith

After 16 years, Will Smith and his lovely wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, have enjoyed one of  the most successful celebrity marriages ever. They have produced two talented children and have been widely considered one of the most powerful celeb couples in Hollywood. Not bad for a teenage rapper from Philly.

Perhaps due to their penchant for keeping it classy, Will asked Jada to marry him in one of the simplest ways possible in 1997. He rolled over in bed and popped the question one night

In 2005, Smith recollected on his proposal to People Magazine: “We were just lying there, going to sleep. I looked over at her and I said, 'Hey, we might be real good married. Wassup? You wanna marry me?' Unplanned. No ring. Not the classic proposal. She said yes. It's really weird when you live the kind of lifestyle that we live: Simplicity becomes the jewel."

Wiz Khalifa & Amber Rose

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose are something of a hip-hop odd couple. Wiz’s festively adorned body is literred with tattoos wile Rose borrows a haircuit popularized by the world’s most famous white rapper. Thus, it should come as a little bit of a shock that the pair got engaged in possibly the most mundane if deeply romantic story possible.

After popping the question to Amber in March 2012, Wiz went on Power 105.1’s Breakfast Club to explain how he asked Amber to take his hand in marriage.

"Real simple," Wiz explained. "It was in the morning time. I just rolled out of bed and got the ring out of the laundry room. Didn't brush my teeth. I was sober ... I gave her the real me."

Wiz Khalifa… Stone cold sober. Odd, indeed.

Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys

Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys recently celebrated their third-year anniversary as a happily married couple in July. The pair got engaged a day before her 29th birthday in January 2010.

Beatz popped the question to Keys while on a lavish Hawaiian vacation where he reportedly offered her a huge seven-carat diamond ring. The pair soon announced that Alicia was pregnant with their first son, Egypt Daoud Ibarr Dean, which she gave birth to in October of that same year. Meanwhile, six months after Swizzy asked for Ms. Key's hand in marriage, they officially tied the knot on the French Island of Corsica in July 2010.

DJ Khaled Proposes To Nicki Minaj

Sometimes when it comes to love, we have to aim for the sky. Back in July, DJ Khaled took shot at forest moon of Endor when he offered a marriage proposal to rap superstar Nicki Minaj live on MTV. In the video, Khaled lists his many reasons for his proposed union between the producer and the rapper including the pair’s shared affliction of suffering from too much success.

The proposal would prove to be less than sincere as Khaled admitted that the proposal was a publicity stunt for his new collaborative single, “I Wanna Be With You,” with Minaj. Although, we assume that somewhere deep inside that Khaled meant every word that he said to Nicki. You'll get there, Khaled. Someday.

Jay Z and Beyonce

And there’s Jay Z and Beyoncé... They are hip-hop’s golden couple and the pair that all other marriages are judged upon regardless of race, creed, class, religion or species.

The pair has been together since 2002 after the pair started dating when Bey was only 19 years old. In 2007, the power couple became officially engaged when Jay reportedly cancelled several stops on his world tour to meet up with Beyonce in Cannes, France during the coastal French cities annual film festival. Hov asked the Baddest Chick In The Game to marry him in a surprise proposal on the French Riveria. Six years later, Jay Z and Beyonce are still going strong as she gave birth to a daughter, Blue Ivy, on January 7, 2012.
