Everything You Need to Know About the 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards
The 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards are giving rap fans something to look forward to this October. The evening, which is one of the biggest moments for the rap world in 2016, will be full of performances, big wins and elite honors inside the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta.
The West Coast will be represented to the fullest during the awards show when Snoop Dogg receives the I Am Hip Hop Icon Award. From albums like his debut opus, Doggstyle, to his collaborations with Dr. Dre, Snoop's early work set the foundation for his lauded career, which now includes everything from movies to the cannabis business.
As for the nominees, Drake leads the pack with 14 nominations in categories including Best Live Performer, Lyricist of the Year, MVP of the Year and Album of the Year. DJ Khaled's I Changed A Lot, Dr. Dre's Compton, Fetty Wap's self-titled LP, Future's DS2 and Kanye West's The Life of Pablo compete against Drizzy's Views for the Album of the Year title.
Future scores the second-most nominations with 10 in categories like MVP of the Year, Hustler of the Year, Best Mixtape and Album of the Year. Chance The Rapper's Coloring Book, French Montana's Wave Gods (Hosted By Max B), Lil Uzi Vert's Lil Uzi Vert VS. The World, Young Thug's Slime Season 3 and Future's Purple Reign go head to head in the Best Mixtape category.
DJ Khaled, who hosts the ceremony, receives nine noms, while Kanye West rounds out fourth place with eight. Check out the full list of nominees below.
Viewers can also expect the show's trademark cyphers, which will feature special guest Kevin Hart rapping as his musical alias Chocolate Droppa. He provides some levity to a night that is otherwise characterized as serious with T.I. performing “We Will Not,” off his recently released US or Else EP, amidst a Black Lives Matter backdrop while Big K.R.I.T. and Lecrae recite spoken word on the pressing matter.
Other performers include Gucci Mane, Desiigner, Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert, Quavo, Lil Yachty, Isaiah Rashad, D.R.A.M., 21 Savage and Dae Dae. Tune in Tuesday (Oct. 4) at 8 p.m./ 7 p.m. C on BET to see it all take place.
