VH1 released the trailer for its upcoming made-for-tv movie The Breaks starring Mack Wilds, Method Man and Wood Harris. The Breaks is based on Dan Charanas book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop and follows the characters as they chase their respective dreams of making it in the music industry. Based on the trailer it appears that Wilds will play a producer/DJ hoping for his big break while Meth plays his non-supportive father. The Breaks will air Jan. 4, 2016. Check out the trailer above.

The Breaks has the hallmark of a successful VH1 film: a strong, authentic storyline that celebrates a musical moment,” said Susan Levison, EVP, Original Programming and Production, VH1. “The story covers a seminal time when some thought Hip-Hop was a passing fad–The Breaks will show how it became an enduring force. We can’t wait to share it with our viewers.”

In April, it was announced that DJ Premier was added to compose the score and act as the executive music producer of the original film.

The film is a reunion of sorts for Wilds, Meth and Harris as they all starred on HBO's hit series The Wire at some point during the show's five season run. By no coincidence, the director and executive producer for the movie, Seith Mann also served as a director for a few episodes of The Wire.
