DJ Premier will compose the score and serve as executive music producer of the new original movie The Breaks coming on VH1. The Breaks was inspired by Dan Charnas’ book “The Big Payback,” a narrative history of the hip-hop business. The VH1 film will be written, directed and executive produced by Seith Mann (The Wire, The Walking Dead, Homeland). The Breaks is set to premiere for late Fall 2015.

The movie was announced in January. Susan Levison, EVP, Original Programming and Production, VH1 said previously that “The Breaks has the hallmark of a successful VH1 film: a strong, authentic storyline that celebrates a musical moment.”  The Breaks will chronicle the journey of three friends who are united by their love of hip-hop, working to make a big splash in the music industry. It's set in the summer of 1990 in New York City. Nikki Jones is a brilliant recent graduate who abandoned a scholarship to law school to pursue her dream of becoming a record executive. Her boyfriend, David Aaron, is the scrappy son of a legendary music producer who is unwilling to rest on his father’s laurels and notorious reputation. DeeVee is an aspiring producer on the hunt to find the next big rapper on the come-up. The movie also could become a possible TV series.

Premo earlier this year unveiled his new live band—a five piece accompaniment featuring drummer, bass player, horns, keys, trombone—in Osaka and Tokyo for six shows. The legendary producer is also gearing up to drop his debut album, Last Session @320, later this year.
