It was only a matter of time before Wale responded to Kid Cudi’s recent remarks. On Friday (September 17), Wale called into DJ Drama’s radio show to give his take on the disparaging comments the Cleveland rapper made in Complex's latest cover story.

In the article, Cudi discussed taking exception to Wale’s line on the “Thank You Freestyle” from December 2009, where the DC rapper said, “Throwin’ around wallets like the dude that Kid Cudi hit,” a reference to an incident Cudi had during a concert where he attacked a fan.

“It wasn’t a shot, it’s just a simple-ass rhyme by a simple-ass rapper,” the Cleveland representer said in the story. Later adding, “Then people like Wale get mad that ‘Ye ain’t give him no beats—’Ye ain’t give you no beats because we ain’t fucking with your raps. It’s not a conspiracy theory. We don’t fuck with you musically, so we’re not going to provide music for you.”

Early on Friday, Wale responded on Twitter, writing, “Niggas lettin that liquid cocaine get to them,” a reference to Cudi’s admitted cocaine use. By the time he hit up Drama that night, however, he sounded a bit more calm. “It’s a rhyme,” he stated, plainly. “Like, you know, I could use your name [DJ Drama] for a metaphor. It’s just rap music. There wasn’t no malice out of it. It is what it is. It’s a line. That’s what rappers do—we make lines. Nine out of 10 rappers wouldn’t take that as a diss.”

He also said that he’s continuing to learn with each passing day. “As I’m growing as a man and as an artist, you just see what you gotta do and how you gotta carry yourself and why you keep your circle small,” he stated. “But it’s all good.”
