Jay-Z and Roc Nation have just entered a big-time partnership.

On Tuesday (Aug. 13), The New York Times reported that the Roc Nation founder will partner with the NFL to oversee some entertainment options for the league. He and the Roc will also be overseeing some of the league's social justice endeavors. This includes Hov, who has, along with Roc, been named the league's “live music entertainment strategist,” overseeing the Super Bowl halftime show.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear that this does not necessarily mean Hov will be performing in that coveted spot.

“He was very quick to say that he does not want this to be about him performing, that it was broader than that,” Goodell said in an interview. “It quickly went beyond that. Do I hope he’ll perform in the Super Bowl sometime in the next several years? Yes. But I think we’ll all know if that time comes. He’ll know in particular.”

In addition to the Super Bowl, Roc Nation will also choose the artists who will perform in different NFL content throughout the season. In a statement, Jay shared his thoughts on the partnership.

“I think we have autonomy,” Jay said. “I anticipate that there will be a lot of — with any big organization, in this building right here we have internal problems. Anything that’s new is going to go through its growing pains. We put what we want to do on the table. The NFL agreed to it. So we’re gonna proceed with that as if we have a partnership.”

As the deal pertains to the social justice element, something Jay has long been focused on, Roc Nation will help with the NFL’s existing Inspire Change program.

This is an interesting move amid previous Super Bowl boycotts due to the perceived mistreatment of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Perhaps this new partnership can start some important internal conversations about Kap as well. Hov said he wants to help the NFL be all-inclusive.

“The NFL has a great big platform, and it has to be all-inclusive,” he said. “They were willing to do some things, to make some changes, that we can do some good.”

A press conference is expected on Wednesday (Aug. 14).
