Ariana Grande's headlining set at Coachella included a surprise appearance by her friend and frequent collaborator Nicki Minaj on Sunday (April 14), but unfortunately, things didn't go quite as planned.

During her set, it Nicki's earpieces reportedly lost sound during her two-song performance of “Side to Side” and “Bang Bang,” leaving her unable to properly perform her verses for the tracks.

In video captured by a fan in the audience, you can see Ariana trying to hype Nicki and fill in with ad-libs as much as she could, but it was clear that Nicki was unable to properly hear the beat and the background vocals she needed to rap over.

The Queens rapper's surprise performance came just after Ariana brought out *NSYNC as another surprise (sans Justin Timberlake) and all four members of the pop group seemingly had no issues with their earpieces or sound. However, Ariana brought out Diddy and Ma$e to perform "Mo Money Mo Problems" after Nicki's set, and they too appeared to have issues. According to reports, newcomer Lizzo also suffered sound problems during her set earlier in the day.

Nicki and Ariana have performed together many times, and this is actually not the first time Nicki ran into issues while sharing the stage with her longtime friend. During Nicki's 2014 MTV Video Music Awards performance of her Ariana and Jessie J collaboration, "Bang Bang," Nicki suffered a wardrobe malfunction when her dress literally split in half. Still, she managed to keep it together by holding it for the duration of her performance.
