Rapping wasn’t Smokepurpp’s first musical interest—the Miami rapper actually got his start producing. Yet since being convinced by BFF and fellow 2018 XXL Freshman Lil Pump to pursue the main stage and pick up the mic himself, Purpp has become pretty good at it, developing a swagged-out flow that fits perfectly over the lo-fi, bass-heavy beats on which he’s become accustomed to rhyming.

Smokepurpp goes a cappella for his 2018 XXL Freshman freestyle, though, keeping to his usual start-and-stop delivery. In under a minute, he delves into a day in the life of the 21-year-old rapper: stealing girlfriends and daring their dudes to retaliate.

“Young rich nigga, I really can’t pipe now/Lil bitch really wanna pipe, now her boyfriend mad so he really wanna fight now/I don’t give a fuck though/Young nigga hang with the cutthroats/Lil bitch pussy I’ma bust though/Nigga touch me and I’m really finna bust though,” he rhymes.

It’s the usual subject matter for Smokepurpp—just see his Lil Pump collaboration “OK.” But you can hear him diversify his flow on tracks like “Pray” with A$AP Ferg, on which he accelerates his rhymes so much that his words feel connected. Meanwhile, the thunderous “Audi” is a play on the popular “ayy flow” that has become synonymous with SoundCloud rap.

On “123,” from his collaborative project with Murda Beatz, Purpp boasts: “Yeah these verses worth a brick.” Lucky for you, his 2018 XXL Freshman freestyle is free. Check out his latest rhyme in the video below.
