Bow Wow and Jermaine Dupri Receive Spirit of Detroit Awards
Bow Wow and Jermaine Dupri have been putting serious work into the music industry for years now, but they've also made time to do the same with the community at large. According to The Detroit News, Detroit City Councilwoman Mary Sheffield recognized Bow Wow and Dupri's record of community service by presenting them with the Spirit of Detroit Award during their SoSoSummer 2017 tour stop in the city last week.
For Sheffield, giving the two artists the famed award was an opportunity to recognize shed light on the seldom seen aspects of both, while emphasizing the importance of education and encouraging others to "achieve greatness." “Oftentimes we only see one side of hip hop or one side of the artist, but we don’t see the side where you’re giving back to the community,” Sheffield said at the time.
Dupri, who's no doubt been a charitable dude in the past, acknowledged the award in an Instagram post uploaded a short time after the ceremony. The post features an image of himself and Bow Wow holding up their awards while standing on opposite sides of Sheffield. Gotta love it.
Dupri and Bow Wow are currently in the midst of their SoSoSummer 2017 tour. Following in the footsteps of the Bad Boy Reunion tour, the trek finds acts like Bow Wow—who signed to Dupri's So So Def Record more than 15 years ago—and Da Brat hosting an event described as a "summer destination for families, kids, teens, and community organizations."
