Mariah Carey May Be Looking to Join Jay-Z’s Roc Nation for Management
It looks like Mariah Carey could be headed to the Roc. According to Page Six, she already has. On Monday night (Nov. 20), the site reported that the legendary singer had signed with JAY-Z's Roc Nation after firing her former manager, Stella Bulochnikov, a few weeks ago.
Their sources say Carey's looking into "cleaning house," and replace previous handlers she "didn't even know" and hire "legitimate people, assistants" and a lawyer. Bulochnikov, the source says, isn't happy with this development. Carey's "boy toy" backup dancer Bryan Tanaka has been acting as her manager, but, apparently, he's taken on what's being called a "creative director" role.
If Carey, who has inextricable ties to hip-hop, has signed to Roc Nation, she's just the latest in what's been a very steady stream of veterans aligning themselves with the label's management team. Statik Selektah signed with Roc Nation for management purposes back in May, while CNN's Van Jones joined the Roc that same month. Carey might just be Roc Nation's biggest signing to date.
Going back to the early 1990s, Carey's powerful, yet pop-friendly vocals have made her one of the music business' most acclaimed talents. She hasn't dropped a new album in almost four years, and if this report is true, she's potentially looking to drop some new-new very soon—with the help of Roc Nation.
XXL has reached out to Roc Nation for confirmation but has not heard back as of press time.
