Happy Birthday, Lil Uzi Vert!
Today, July 31, marks the birthday of Philadelphia-hailing rap rocker Lil Uzi Vert! The charismatic, stage-diving, hair-dying phenom now turns 24.
Born and raised in Philly, Uzi started rapping as a teen. Growing up with a love of Paramore and Marilyn Manson as well as Kanye West and the Ying Yang Twins, Uzi's fashion and music style blended the worlds of punk rock and rap together. Uzi began spreading his sound by dropping music on SoundCloud and caught the attention of the industry fast. Uzi's intial big break came when DJ Drama and Don Cannon signed the rock rapper, paired him up with the likes of A$AP Ferg and DJ Carnage for "WDYW" and released his first major label mixtape Luv Is Rage in 2015. The tape boasted features from Wiz Khalifa and Young Thug and perked the ears of fans with tracks like "Yamborghini Dream." Uzi's next tape, 2016's Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World took his sound mainstream with party-starters like "Money Longer" and "You Was Right." Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World peaked at No. 37 on the Billboard 200. The same year Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World came out, Uzi scored a spot on the 2016 XXL Freshman Class alongside the likes of Lil Yachty, Desiigner and 21 Savage.
Life post-Freshmen has been good to Uzi. Earlier this year, young Uzi scored his first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single thanks to his guest verse on Migos' "Bad and Boujee" and he's known for putting on one of the wildest live shows in music right now.
Uzi's latest big single, "XO Tour Lif3", dropped back in March and even though there's been no official music video or heavy promotion from the rapper's label, the SoundCloud loosie is a top contender for 2017's song of the summer. The melodramatic rap produced by TM88 is already certified six times platinum.
Happy Birthday, Uzi!
