Four Safe MCs for Conservatives to Pick on
Yesterday (May 10) news broke that the conservative army including Sarah Palin, Fox News and Mike Drudge of the Drudge Report, had their sights on Common. Apparently the right wingers had their panties in a bunch over First Lady, Michele Obama’s decision to invite Com to the White House for a event celebrating American poetry. Even Sean Hannity weighed in earlier today.
The Chicago lyricist was apparently way too gangsta for Palin and company. I mean the G.O.O.D. Music artist is just sooo controversial. Did you hear what he said about former President George W? Wow. Send him to Guantanamo Bay this instant. He’s a threat. (That's sarcasm folks.)
With that in mind, XXL decided to come up with a list of four “safer” options that Mrs. Obama could have invited to the White House (That’s right four, it’s slim pickings when it comes to politically-correct, non-offensive rappers). Only problem is, it’s pretty easy for the conservative media to spin their story and make even the most squeaky-clean MCs seem naughty. Don't believe me, see for yourself.
Young MC – Sure, the West Coast rapper is know for his classic hit, “Bust A Move,” has a degree from the USC and released music urging listeners to take responsibility for their actions, but he also penned “Wild Thing,” for former label mate Tone-Loc’s ode to knockin boots.” Can someone say "he's a perv!"
Will Smith – Everyone loves the Fresh Prince right? Wrong. The conservative mafia can easily break down the South Philly native’s image. One word folks: Scientology.
Nick Cannon – Mr. Nickelodeon should be a pretty safe bet, you might say, right? He even refers to himself as corny, so this should be a lay up. Nope. Back when he was beefing with Eminem, defending his wife, Mariah Carey’s honor, Nick said plenty of comments, including the almighty “R-word,” on his blog that can easily be taken the wrong way. Would Ms. Obama invite someone who says this into her house?
"Maybe I'm going too far, but I thought we got past the days where white men could spew vulgar obscenities at our beautiful queens and get away with it," Cannon wrote. "What's next? Are we going to let this trash say something horrible about our lovely first lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama? Or would Marshall have talked sideways out of his neck like this about Oprah Winfrey? This act of racist bigotry cannot go unnoticed. Calling my wife a 'cunt' and a 'whore' is way worse than anything Don Imus could have ever said. So trust, repercussions will be served. Anybody got Al Sharpton's number?!"
Diggy Simmons – Reverend Run’s son seems harmless right. You’re right he is… now. But wait till he turns 18. Word to Bow Wow and Romeo.
