Flying Lotus Scores ‘Black Out 2022’ Short Film in Support of ‘Blade Runner 2049′
Flying Lotus got one of his first major breaks by submitting songs to the very anime-centric Adult Swim, so it's only right he continues to contribute to the world of Japanese animation. Recently, it was revealed FlyLo is scoring the short anime film, Black Out 2022, which is actually directed by Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichiro Watanabe.
The new animated film is a prequel to the forthcoming Denis Villeneuve-directed neo-noir sci-fi film Blade Runner 2049, which stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. The film will be released in theaters this Friday (Oct. 6). In a tweet he posted last month, FlyLo made it known that he believed working with Watanabe was a big deal.
"Doing something with Watanabe was a dream of mine. Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest!" wrote Flying Lotus, whose film, Kuso, was released this past summer. It's hard to say he's wrong about this one.
The first Blade Runner film saw Ford play the lead role as it chronicled the exploits of one former police officer tasked with bringing bioengineered beings called replicants to justice—or, if necessary, killing them outright. Blade Runner 2049 will pick up from where that film left off, and Black Out 2022 will take place before the events of the new film.
"In 2022, an EMP detonation has caused a global blackout that has massive, destructive implications all over the world. Directed by Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo's Shinichiro Watanabe, Black Out 2022 is a new and highly-anticipated animated short, which serves as a prologue for the upcoming feature film Blade Runner 2049," reads Warner Bros.'s plot synopsis for the film.
Black Out 2022 can be watched on anime streaming site Crunchy Roll now. You can also watch it on YouTube below.
