Last night (September 30) marked a big moment for Danny Brown.

The Detroit MC’s debut album, Old, isn’t releasing until October 8, but fans have the opportunity to stream it in full on Spotify. Danny held a private listening for selected journalists and tastemakers at the company’s new NYC office. In a much more informal setting, Danny was relaxed, holding a glass of liquor and dapping up his homies such as Paul Rosenberg and Heems, who congratulated him on his album release.

Brown was also joined by A-Trak, the co-founder of the indie label Fool’s Gold who signed him earlier this year. Just moments before playing the 19-track album, A-Trak got on stage to speak on the importance of Brown in hip-hop. He compared him to the cult figures of the genre—Eazy-E, B-Real, Ol' Dirty Bastard—and made a point that his voice always needs to be heard. “Danny Brown is one of one. There will only be on Danny Brown,” A-Trak says. “He never felt like he needed to reach or follow a formula."

Brown’s history with Fool’s Gold has been rocky during his album promotion, where he first expressed frustrations that it would never come out. Threats to leak his album were settled with A-Trak securing a release date. When he took center stage later that night, Brown showed no signs of animosity and was thankful for the support. “Without these guys, I wouldn't be able to take two years to make an album like this."

No need to wait for his moment anymore. It’s finally here.
