Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” Video Gets Some Wild Pop, Spanish and Reggae Mashups
Childish Gambino's "This Is America" video already has everyone scratching their heads in awe as they try to decipher all of its potential hidden messages and meanings, but some fans are more busy turning it into different mashups. Along with the memes and reenactments that some people have made of the visuals, some social media users have put other songs over the video that coincide pretty perfectly with all of Gambino and his crew's choreography.
One of the new mashup versions of the video features Gambino dancing to Earth, Wind and Fire's "September" record on beat, while another user created a mashup specifically for West Indians that goes along to Busy Signal's "Step Out" joint. There's also a mashup version that features Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" that features some of the controversial parts of the video hitting the climax of the smash hit record, while a Spanish version dubs Mexican band Los Tucanes de Tijuana's "La Chona" record over the video.
Another version of the video, which was edited by DJ Cummerbund, features Gambino's original lyrics over Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" instrumental.
Along with its video getting the viral and remix treatment, Chart Data reported earlier today (May 14) that "This Is America" just debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The major feat by Gambino knocks Drake off of his 15-week streak at the top spot with both "God's Plan" and "Nice For What."
During a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week (May 11), the "Redbone" entertainer revealed that even though the video has gone viral online, he hasn't been on the Internet since before his Saturday Night Live hosting gig and performance, which is when the visuals were also released to the public.
"I haven’t been on the internet since Thursday night before Saturday Night Live," he admits. “I was like, ‘I don’t want to be in all the mix.’ It’s bad for me. I’m really sensitive so I’ma be like, 'Let it be.’"
Gambino then jokes that whenever someone says something negative about him, he is the type to search their social media and find information about them.
"I see one negative thing and I track that person down. I go into their Instagram and be like, ‘You’re not so great. That baby’s not even that cute!'"
