On this day, May 12, in hip-hop history...

2014: On May 12, 2014, security footage leaked of Solange Knowles attacking her brother-in-law and rap mogul Jay Z inside an elevator leaving New York's 2014 Met Gala.

The blurry black and white video of Solange hitting and kicking Jay while his wife Beyoncé looks on hit the web one week after the Gala itself took place on May 4, 2014. According to TMZ. who obtained the tape, the violent altercation happened at a Met Gala after party at the Standard Hotel in New York. This video sparked rampant rumors about Jay and Bey's relationship and put a stain on their usually squeaky clean, private image.

A few days after the video surfaced and inspired some of the funniest memes Twitter had to offer, Jay Z, Beyoncé and Solange released a joint statement about the incident, saying, "They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family." And while the real reason behind the brawl has yet to see the light of day, Bey still made reference to it in her 2014 "Flawless" remix featuring Nicki Minaj: "Of course sometimes shit goes down when there's a billion dollars in an elevator." Additionally, Bey's most recent album, Lemonade tackled topics of cheating and betrayal, which many music fans speculate is a response to Jay Z's infidelity, the same reason Solange wild out on Jay that night in the elevator.

Just a little over a year after Bey dropped off her acclaimed Lemonade album, Hov released his critically acclaimed 4:44 LP, a project that seemingly answered many of the questions raised by Hov and Solange's infamous Met Gala incident. On "Kill Jay-Z," Hov actually mentions Solange the elevator assault. "You egged Solange on/Knowin' all along, all you had to say you was wrong," he spit on the track. That about settles it.
