Queen Latifah Wins Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie for ‘Bessie’ at 2016 NAACP Image Awards
Queen Latifah won another award for her role as Bessie Smith in the HBO TV movie Bessie, taking home the Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie trophy at the 2016 NAACP Image Awards.
Latifah beat out some well known names in order to win the award including, Angela Bassett – American Horror Story: Hotel (FX Networks), Aunjanue Ellis – The Book of Negroes (BET), Jill Scott – With this Ring (Lifetime) and LaTanya Richardson Jackson – Show Me a Hero (HBO).
Other hip-hop winners included Straight Outta Compton which won the award for Outstanding Motion Picture and Oshea Jackson Jr. who won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in the record-breaking film.
The accolades are starting to add up for Mrs. Latifah for her Bessie role. Earlier in the week she won the Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actress for the film. Latifah had previously won SAG Awards in 2008 for for her role in the TV movie Life Support, and in 2003, for her role in the ensemble cast of Chicago.
The acting gigs continue to roll in for the Queen as well. Coming off the heels of her spot in The Wiz Live!, it was recently announced she will be starring in a new Lee Daniels-produced TV show about the Atlanta music scene titled Star.
After starting her rap career in the late '80s, Queen Latifah put out her last album Persona in 2009.
