2014 Budweiser Made In America Festival - Day 1 - Los Angeles

Kendrick Lamar's sophomore LP To Pimp a Butterfly is pretty much the only thing anyone is talking about in hip-hop today, with last night's release coming a week early for fans waiting desperately for March 23 to finally arrive. But when the album did finally come out it was immediately praised for its lush, funky and jazzy production with beats from Sounwave, Terrace Martin, Rahki and more taking bits and pieces from the likes of The Isley Brothers, Sly and the Family Stone and James Brown. But the classics that have become staples of L.A. gangsta rap since the days of Dr. Dre's The Chronic aren't the only pieces of musical history K.Dot draws from. Sprinkled in among the funk are songs from Sufjan Stevens, Michael Jackson and Boris Gardiner, proving that Kendrick's musical palette extends beyond the funk and soul that has for so long defined a genre.

As we continue to digest To Pimp a ButterflyXXL went through the album credits and pulled together all the songs sampled, interpolated or referenced musically within the album's 16 tracks. —Dan Rys
