Nas is not startled that policer officers are killing unarmed black men. "Unfortunately, I'm not surprised cops are still murdering people," said Nas in a recent interview with GQ. "But I am surprised that the law enforcement did not do the correct thing with illegal chokeholds.  A chokehold because of a man stating his piece—telling them he didn't do anything. An illegal chokehold! It's embarrassing to New York, and it's embarrassing to the country. I've got to go around the world, and people will ask me, "What's wrong with America?" This is why they don't like us."

The chokehold Nasir Jones is referring to is the one administered by NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo on Eric Garner, which subsequently took Garner's life. Garner, 43, was approached by officers for peddling loose cigarettes. Officer Pantaleo then proceeded to put Garner in a chokehold that took his life. The incident was captured on video. Pantaleo was cleared of any wrongdoing last month.

As a part of "The Legacy Project" for their February issue, the men's lifestyle and fashion magazine honors musical heavy weights who have had a profound impact on the industry this year. In the interview, Nas Escobar touches also on a number of topics, including his infamous beef with Jay Z, retiring from the game, and Illmatic. As the interview progresses, The Don expands on his thoughts, discussing the responsibility to help change the system, as well as the responsibility of fellow rappers.
