Chicago MC Mick Jenkins impressed us with his sophomore mixtape The Water[s] released this past August, and his latest visual for "Treat Me (Caucasian)," which features fellow Chicago rapper Supa BWE, reaffirms our views on the young wordsmith. "Treat Me" is a song that did not make the mixtape, but the quality of the message delivered makes one wonder why such a track didn't make the cut. Nevertheless, the visual is beautifully done, featuring a split screen of Mick Jenkins on one side representing the experience of a young African-American, and Supa BWE representing the experience of young Caucasian. The song and video makes a multitude of references to police brutality aimed towards African-Americans in recent times. Cut-away scenes featuring the now infamous videos of a New York City police officer placing Eric Garner in a chokehold that ultimately killed him, beating an unarmed woman on the side of a highway, and other difficult to watch police brutality videos do a terrific job of really helping the point hit home. The video also features very subtle cues that showcases the differences that many Caucasians and African-Americans experience as a result of socioeconomic barriers; Supa BWE's Caucasian character enjoys benefits such being able to eat breakfast and to drive a car, while Mick Jenkins's African-American character walks out of the house without eating, and must resort to taking public transportation. The video is great social commentary that is extremely a propos and needed at this moment in time.
