Lil Nas X wins his first big award.

Just about an hour after performing "Panini" onstage at Newark, N.J.'s Prudential Center for the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, Lil Nas X won the VMA for Song of the Year. Predictably, the song that won him the prize was "Old Town Road (Remix)," a Billy Ray Cyrus-assisted, record-breaking track that propelled him to flat-out rap stardom. Other nominees included Drake, Ariana Grande, Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper and Taylor Swift. Needless to say, Nas X was facing some fearsome competition.

Taking the stage with Billy Ray, Nas X pulled out a scroll with his acceptance speech. Gotta love his sense of humor.

While it feels inevitable now, Lil Nas X's success might not have been imaginable for the rapper himself just last year. Speaking with XXL back in April, the rapper recalled the moment his dream of being a rap star started coming to fruition.

"Everything's starting to connect—my love for music and my brain for the internet," Nas X said at the time. "Just like how my dad does music and everything was clicking. I'm not too superstitious. It was just a definite type of thing. It was like, this is gonna happen, it's gonna happen soon. Somehow, someway, it did."

Congrats to Lil Nas X.
