Today, Oct. 12, is the birthday of famed producer Matthew Samuels, better known to the hip-hop world as Boi-1da. He is now 32 years of age.

Hailing from the island of Jamaica, Boi-1da moved to Ontario, Canada at the age of three. Showing an interest in the art of beat making early, Boi-1da linked up with Canada's most famous rap import, Drake, producing tracks on Drizzy's first mixtape, Room For Improvement in 2006 at the age of 18.

Boi-1da cites Dr. Dre, Swizz Beatz and The Neptunes as well as his West Indian roots as his musical influences. 1da often incorporates reggae and dancehall bass lines in his beats and over the years, has produced for Drake, Eminem, Jay-Z, G-Unit, Nicki Minaj, Nas, Talib Kweli, Kendrick Lamar and more. Fans of the beat smith will know his sound from hit songs like Eminem's "Not Afraid," Drake's "0 to 100/The Catch Up" and DJ Khaled's "No New Friends." To date, 1da has two Grammy Awards under his belt for production on Drizzy's 2011 single "Over" and 2013 album, Take Care.

Today, 1da is one of Drake's most trusted in house producers. In January 2016, Drake released the single "Summer Sixteen" in anticipation for his then-upcoming album Views. The track was produced by OVO 40, Cubeatz and Boi-1da. When Drake did finally drop Views in April of that year, 1da produced the six songs on the LP including "9," "Hype" "Controlla" and "Pop Style."

Last year, Boi-1da produced Belly's entire Mumble Rap album before earning another production credit for G-Eazy's A$AP Rocky and Cardi B-featuring track "No Limit." In the summer of 2018 he helped produce Eminem's Joyner Lucas-assisted Kamikaze track "Lucky You."

Happy Birthday, Boi-1da!
